The goo is silicone gel. You can wipe it off but it might come back until it's all leached out of the plastic.

This is the same silicone gel from the 80's and 90's that leaches out of old breast implants from the same era. Imagine trying to clean that sticky gunk off a patient's chest wall.

I think 'Everclear' is pure 190 proof/95% ethanol, without any methanol, dye or bitterent?
You can drink EC and get drunk, you can also drink 'meths' .....if you want a trip to A&E (ER).

Yes, the point being that Everclear won't poison you or make you go blind if you splash some of it on you or inadvertently breathe too much of the vapor (methanol is easily absorbed through the skin). The active ingredient in denatured alcohol, the thing that's doing the solvent-activity, is the ethanol. So just buy some pure, food grade ethanol and be safe.

Sounds different. Meths is, apparently, mostly ethanol with a bit of methanol, not totally methanol.

• Ethanol/ethyl alcohol/grain alcohol is C2H5OH or CH3CH2OH. Drinkable.
• Methanol/methyl alcohol/wood alcohol is CH3OH. Not drinkable.

'Meths' is (in UK) ethanol plus ~10% methanol, a bitterant and usually a dye.
Used as a general solvent, fuel additive, and in antifreeze.

'Meth' or methamphetamine is C10H15N is an N-methyl derivative of amphetamine.
Makes people go faster

What is called "meths" in the UK is called in the US "denatured" alcohol.

The whole thing revolves around taxes on distilled liquor. Ethanol with some poison added is not drinkable (although people in advanced stages of alcoholism and destitution try it, and go blind) so it's not taxes as a distilled liquor.

Frankly, I think the idea of adding poison to ethanol that's not taxed as liquor, knowing that desperate alcholics will still drink it and be poisoned by it, is pretty morally reprehensible, but they didn't ask me.

Personally, I avoid all contact with methanol. It can be absorbed through the skin and the dosage for ill effects is not well established and can vary person to person.

Personally, I do not avoid contact with ethanol: wine, beer, and spirits.

Under the former Soviet regime when anti-alcohol campaigns were commonplace, many heavy drinkers turned to meths or "denaturat" leading to large numbers of alcohol poisonings and deaths. In 2016, 78 people in Irkutsk died in a mass methanol poisoning.
Blindness and death from homemade hooch adulterated with methanol is also common in India and S. Asia .
