I see from his biog at the Grauniad and Wikipedia that he only took up the bass because his singing voice was damaged by polio. It's odd to think that it can be little twists of fate that lead people to their ultimate vocations. That would be the last polio epidemic that swept North America before vaccination became widespread. The same epidemic caused muscle damage that led to Joni Mitchell's unique guitar style. Neil Young was also a victim.
"I want to take people away from the ugliness and sadness around us every day and bring beautiful, deep music to as many people as I can".

Dear Charlie, saw him with Ornette Coleman and with Carla Bley. Perfect sound, heart in the right place. His album Nocturne won a Grammy Latin Jazz award, it's one of my all time favourites, haunting, melodic, atmospheric. RIP you star.
