Practising in Weird Places

I was thinking about the different and strange places I have practised. Is it just me, or is it really difficult finding exactly the right place to play?

Has found the 'perfect place', or has anyone practised somewhere really weird?

We have a cellar in our house which is fitted out as a music room (and wine cellar) and is the perfect place. It is big enough to accomodate our 4tets in comfort. If we get frustrated we just open another bottle of red... hic.hic

I usually practise in the kitchen pointing at the glass cabinets, you get a really nice bounce back to actually hear what your saxophone is projecting.

I practiced on Sunday in the back of a local pub and in a lorry trailer.

Playing outside with nice weather is lovely.

Like Linky, I practice in the kitchen these days. Many years ago, I often used to practice in a graveyard next to an old derelict church. The only real reason was that it was outside, miles from anywhere and there was never anyone around.

Oh for a derelict church in the middle of nowhere...

I guess if you're a good sax player you can play anywhere and feel comforted by the fact that you're more likely to entertain those within earshot, rather than drive them loopy!

I live in the middle of Sheffield in a block of flats so tend to go into our tiny box room, which is stacked with junk and hopefully muffles the sound quite well! I hope I don't upset our neighbours too much; we've not had any complaints yet!

There used to be an old derilect water pumping staiton near my flat which was superb. The walls were lined in ceramic tiles os it's main room was like being in the bottom of a very big, very deep empty swimmming pool.. amazing acoustic. Unfortunately now turned into yuppie flats. 😡

When you're rich and famous you can buy one, just for old time's sake......
😛

how about an underground parking garage, all concrete. the drivers honk their horns as they,re driving by, upside if i can get a decent sound in that place i,ll ace it anywhere.

Gold Medal:
I found an abandoned border patrol hut between Switzerland and France just near my old flat which was absolutely perfect. Surrounded by fields and passing cars, it had a porch of sorts and a bench to sit on. Perfectly shielded from the elements and no danger of disturbing anyone apart from passing dogs and their owners. The 15 min walk to get there could be perilous when the weather was bad, but to this date, it's been my best one.

Silver Medal:
University of Geneva has some nice little hidden corners and alcoves which can be easily accessed by the general public meaning that if I esconce myself in one of these, passers by might hear some music coming from somewhere but would have to take quite a detour off the main pathways to find me.

Bronze Medal
In a park near where I used to live in North London, there is a gated section called the Philip Noel-Baker peace garden. It had lovely garden sections and a pond of sorts where it was possible to sit around the edges. Benches tucked away in secluded places. Loads of flowers and plants. Due to the local predilection for vandalism and wanton destruction, more and more often, it was locked. First thing in the morning, over the fence I went and into the garden for a good tootle in the morning air with no disturbances. Bliss.

Possible Medal Contender:
The roof of my building is the next contender. Just moved into a new flat and live on the top floor, but haven't quite got around setting up the ladder, climbing out onto the roof and having a tootle. On my to-do list 🙂

I live on campus at Trent Park so I have god knows how many miles of green around to go practice in. I love going into the woods and playing it's great! 🙂

I've actually been up to your campus. My goodness it is a trek through the woods to get from the tube station to your music department.

And there is one last bit once the main road has come to an end and you have to walk past what looks like a caretakers house and through some seriously dark parts.

I would only be practicing in the daytime if it wasn't in the music rooms 🙂

Well i dont know about practising in weird places but i get plenty of weird looks up at my bedroom window when people walk past.
Im very shocked no one on my road has called the R.S.P.C.A yet to tell them the pain and tourture im putting my poor dogs through.

Anyway happy practising

Regards

I played in the GYM once)))))))))))))) was funny...it was empty, cos it was the end of the day) lol.

Also played in the forest)

And I heard that a lot of the old sax players here, in Russia used to play inside the wardrobe...not to bother the neighbours)

I'm looking forward to going to university.

Their music department has some rooms in the basement.
Everything is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via Key-cards.

I can stay up all night long practising and recording whenever the inspiration takes place (which normally happens to me later at night, when my brother is in bed and I can't play).
