Saxophone beginners Practise Methods

Hi

After warming up, divide it into technical, music and fun. In the technical section work on what you need to at the time - could be scales, could be rhythm, could be long tones - whatever you need. Then work on a tune or two. And finish with some fun stuff.

My sax teacher has advised me to split my practice time equally between:
1. Long notes;
2. Scales and arpeggios; and
3. The piece of music he has set for me.
I aim to spend an hour a day on practice excluding warm-up and having fun. At first I thought I'd succumb to boredom before the hour was out but I usually find that the hour has gone and I've got to get on with the rest of the day long before I've done. The key to avoiding boredom has been practicing all my stuff using a metronome. Apart from the obvious purpose of metronome practice, it gives me a yardstick by which to measure my efforts at better breathing, for example how slowly can I play a scale on one breath.
I haven't been working to this regime for long enough to say whether I'm achieving the improvements I want.
