well it is my birthday next week, and my lovely hubby has asked me if I would like a PPT..... so now I would like some advice.
I currently play a Meyer 6 medium and enjoy playing jazz, swing, scales (!) and all kinds of music with my Corby group chums....

What do you recommend I go for the 7* or the 8*?
Looking forward to your advice - as I want to oder quite soon as my birthday is next week.
Looking forward to yoru advice
Helen

Hi Helen, happy new year to you. I was playing a Meyer 5m ebonite and wanted to beef up my playing so to speak as i have also joined a band and found i was too quiet, i did not want however to lose control. I have had my PPT 8* for nearly 4 weeks now and am amazed at the difference it has made to my playing. Loud or soft, legato or staccato i just seem to have more control. It did take me a while to get used to the wider tip opening but that was to be expected. I'm no expert i just thought the 9* would be to hard to control at my level of playing and the 7* would have been too similar to my Meyer so i plumped for the middle ground. I play mainly jazz and swing using a Rico Jazz select 2H, i found the 3 reed to hard for me at the moment, i also tried it with a Rico Royal 2 the other day and that was also good. These are my thoughts, be interesting to hear what you decide. Happy birthday for next week. Kind regards Phil :w00t:

I'm temped to say the 7*, but I really like the 8*. I would try it.

I now have a return policy that means if you want to try it and it's really too wide, even with softer reeds than you play at the moment, then I'll change it (you just pay the postage). Alternatively, if I have some in stock you can drop by and try them out.

Much will depend on how experienced you are, ie how easily you adapt to new setups.

If someone was a relative beginner, they would be best with a 7* (though I have to be honest and say they might also be better off sticking with a Meyer 6M!)

But, given that Phil adapted from a 5M, then I'd say go for the 8*. I'll let you try it for a couple of weeks to make sure and as long as you sue a patch I'll happily exchange it for a 7*.

However they are currently out of stock, I have a couple arriving on Monday, but they are already sold. It's unlikely you'll actually get one on your birthday unless I can twist Ed's arm.

thanks guys!! yes Thursday is the day - I always thing that snap birthdays (11,22,33,44,55,66,77,88,99...) are special....to be celebrated by visiting my garden centre to buy my seeds for the year - just what a glamorous life I have!
I am looking forward to my new mpc....no rush, just good to know it has been ordered
best wishes
Helen

Hi Helen!

Have a great birthday - quite a step up on the mouthpiece front - the Meyer 6M is an 81 tip opening, and the PPT 8* would likely be 115 - hope it works out for you but does seem quite a big gap.

Even Vandoren introduced a T6 for their V16 HR, as too many found the T7 too wide. Be interested to hear how it works out, rather than just operate on assumptions.

Are we right in assuming that your birthday has a 4 in it this time - I can't believe you're 88!

Kind regards

So Martyn, your insinuating i have a big gob! Seriously i went from my Meyer 5M to the 8* but just used softer reeds, mind you i do have plenty of puff. Years of Martial arts training. I have found the PPT challenging but it is developing nicely and is giving me the sound that i need for now. As i am learning this may well change in a few months. The 8* just seems to be so free blowing, i don't know enough to explain why it just is, ( for me anyway ).
I'm sure Helen you will get on fine. Don't they know you don't ask ladies their age? What is it? 😛

Hi there!

Just insinuating its a big jump - that is all (you may also have a big gob, but I have no evidence as yet). I play an 8/8* having started smaller and do use FL 2's/Marca 2.5's reeds. I do prefer a freer blowing piece also, and have lots of puff from playing high brass.
Anyway too busy jammin' with Freddie Hubbard on 'Cantaloupe island' (Cornet) to worry about saxes at the mo'.

Kind regards
Tom 8)

Or Martyn, if it is important to you 😛

Hi Tom Martyn Mapfumo, had a real blast last night. One of those days when everything went right. My big gob certainly helped. Staying with the Rico jazz select 2m at the mo though. Good luck with Cantaloupe Island. Phil thehunt demonsax butcher... 😛

The return of the Silver Tongue Cavalier!

Lovely. I am trying not to carry a mental image of the inside of your baritone after a wedge of Helen's cake :x

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
