Verve have recently issued CDs celebrating 50th anniversary of 1957 Newport Jazz Festival and I have been listening to the disk featuring Coleman Hawkins Allstars. The group includes Pete Brown, an alto player that younger readers of this forum may not have heard before. The playing here is an excellent example of his unique, quirky but compelling 'jump' style. You certainly wouldn't mistake him for Johnny Hodges or Charlie Parker.

I can really recommend Pete Brown's playing on Champion Jack Dupree's album "Blues from the Gutter".

It was always likely to be a great album with a band featuring Big Joe Turner (vocals); Freddie Green (guitar); Pete Brown (alto saxophone); Seldon Powell, Frank Wess (tenor saxophone); Joe Newman, Jimmy Nottingham (trumpet); Lawrence Brown (trombone); Pete Johnson (piano); Walter Page (bass); Cliff Leeman (drums).

Two of my favourites albums ever.

PS Why don't we got players nowadays with names like "Champion Jack" and "Big Joe" ? - my wife didn't like the idea of our boy being called Cannonball or Lockjaw, so I suppose that's some of the answer !
