I'm a little drunk. But a few things have happened to me today, I've been thinking alot about some of my family members who have died in the past year (too many) and the problems in the world. i found out my grandma has cancer for the third time. I got chucked out of uni for drug problems and i cant seem to get back on track. Every time i pick up my sax i try to think about that and channel all those bad thoughts and sad emotions into something worth while. Tonight i was playin in my local field ( i live in a village) and a guy came up to me and said thankyou, he thanked me for playing and bringin him happiness. he told me that for five minutes he forgot about the world and lived in what i played. No lie, that touched me so much i cudnt stop crying... That is what music is about for me, all those hours affirmed by one comment. My perception of the world condensed into an song that many can connect to.

What does music mean to you??? ( to all who write on this forum)

It means too much to me to put into words in any meaningful way, I just wouldn't be me without my music (or the music of others) and at times it doesn't matter if anyone hears it or not, although when you make that communication either with your own being/self or those around you it's a wonderful thing.

Hoping all your problems aren't too heavy a burden Funky Monk, and that the load gets lighter. All the best, I was touched by your post.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, but this one positive moment is what can trigger the route to transcending the problems and woes.

Stick with it and use that positive experience to help see the bigger picture - and as you are probably aware, it's a much bigger picture.

ever onwards and upwards.

keep going with it funky monk!

You've obviously got the attitude and desire to put it right, so I believe you can! play your sax every time you feel down. Also if it worked for you trying to express all those negative emotions, why not try and express your positive emotions you've got now?

Uni is pretty rubbish anyway, as I'm finding out. There doesn't seem much point actually attending as I'd get the work done quicker in my own free time. Can't wait till next year when we start learning.

Hey Funky,

Sounds as if you had a real cathartic moment. Man, without music that wouldn't have happened. Let it all out.

Music is your companion through life - it will always be there for you.

Hey Matt. Couple of things. I think I speak for everyone here when I say we are here for you man. You can contact any of us privately if you need a moment of catharsis or support.

Without wishing to cause embarrassment or to embellish too much of my own personal background, I would like to offer my own feelings of empathy. About ten years ago I had a fairly major breakdown, brought on by a succession of events: the death of my mother, divorce, and redundancy. The single thing that got me through was music. I knew that whatever kind of day I'd had, there was always this 'brass friend' waiting for me that would sing me sweet lullabyes. It was the one 'solid' friend I had. I too channeled all my emotion through it, and in return it brought me sanctuary. This -I feel- is the true magic of music. It is, in that sense, perhaps one of mankinds greatest achievements.

Keep on keeping on dude.

Thanks guys. Your posts have helped me. I've taken your advice Linky and put my emotion into some more happy stuff, more upbeat wierd jazz stuff. From all your posts im concentrating on what I do have, music. I feel sorry for those who dont have that outlet, but im sure they find other ways, we are resiliant creatures!! But thanks to you all, you helped one guy along on the arduous road that is life. At least I have a roof over my head and food on the table...in this world it could be so much worse!!!!

I'm sure you all know this verse, Funky, it helpt me through tough times, now I would like to pay it forward..

One night I dreamed a dream.
I was walking along the beach with my Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to me and one to my Lord.

When the last scene of my life shot before me I looked back at the footprints in the sand. There was only one set of footprints. I realized that this was at the lowest and saddest times of my life. This always bothered me and I questioned the Lord about my dilemma.

"Lord, You told me when I decided to follow You, You would walk and talk with me all the way. But I'm aware that during the most troublesome times of my life there is only one set of footprints. I just don't understand why, when I need You most, You leave me."

He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you, never, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------If music be the food of love...I'll be needing the slimfast soon!

FM, sometimes it seems like life is loaded with difficult times and throws up roadblocks, but sometimes those difficult times can make one stop and break out of a pattern and start onto a brand new path and end up the better for it.

I recently had to change jobs into an entirely different field, but I am happier now even though I make a lot less money. Also I played flamenco guitar semi-pro for 10 years but tore some ligaments in my right arm working on my mom's farm and that lead me to put the guitar down for 1-2 years until that heals itself.
So I picked up the saxophone again after 30 years away from it - and I am having a blast.

I was down for a while because I could not continue with my professional career of 25 years and because I could not continue with playing flamenco guitar after going hard at it for 10 years. But I just stopped thinking about what I couldn't do and looked at what else I could do instead and it was a great change for me. Maybe it's one of those times for you to find another path even if its something new and unfamiliar. Maybe better if it is new and unfamiliar.

Good luck,
Andy

Funky, only just read your thread. Your opening post brought a lump to my throat. A lot of people when I play tell me the same things as this feller told you and it does impact emotinally on me. I too have had a rough ride over the last few years, with the loss of my parents and then problems following their deaths with my siblings. I read where you're coming from.

Funky. same felt feelings from all at times. The poetry you play sinks into all of us. I'm touched by your presence here. Verse;

Sometimes life is like living in a maze of rose bushes you can not escape the pricks that surround us.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
