Mouthpieces Mouthpiece Mass.

As you are aware in the brass world heavier mouthpieces are an option, claiming various improvements over normal weight pieces. Had my 105 RPC for a couple of days (hope you are on commission Pete), and noticed that if you touched it whilst playing, the pitch changed. Being much too old, for which read lazy and stupid, to stick the Java 75 or the Yammy 6C on, is this a normal and would heavier, less resonant mouthpiece achieve the improvements claimed by Wicks and Bach for their brass products? There are similarities in that rim diameter and sharpness, cup shape and backbore diameter and form affect the resultant sound and playability and even a twit like me can attest to tip, lay, baffle and chamber shape and size have similar effects on the saxophone.
Opinions please.

Mouthpiece Mass- I thought this was thread concerning performing religious music using just mouthpieces!
On am ore practical note- Jody Espina of Jody Jazz said that when he made an identical mouthpiece in ebonite and brass they sounded exactly the same, the significance of metal the walls can be made thinner, not any innate difference in the material itself

So, from what you're saying Jules, the material has no effect on the sound if the chamber, tip opening, baffle etc of metal and HR pieces are identical; funny, I would have thought the differences of density in the materials would have made a difference.

A mouthpiece-only rendition of religious music would certainly appeal to me.

Well, that's what Jody Jazz said....

The brass mouthpiece manufacturers claim the increased mass 'Mega" mouthpiece provides a greater dynamic range and a darker tone. As it is a column of air that is being excited, if this works for lip, why not for reed vibrated instruments?
