Anybody ever learn something and didnt truly understand what you were learning untill it surfaced in your playing without you trying?

Yep, tritone substitutions and using the whole tone scale.

I kind of knew the theory but hadn't gotten round to experimenting with it.

The I showed my dad a passage I'd came up with and we decided to analyse it to work out what I was doing and put some chords underneath.

Found out I was flaunting the whole tone scale and had a couple tritone subs implied.

I find lots of things happen for me like that.
