Jazz Courses

Hello All,

Can someone suggest some good and effective jazz courses - probably intensive sessions which actually work. I play jazz from 'classic' to 'mainstream' and want to improve my technique. Some of the best courses are very expensive or designed, it would seem, with a top age limit of 21.

One course I applied for was not very happy to tell me what they were going to teach on the course. They did have some very big names on the tutor list who would drift in and out and give concerts. They were somewhat disparaging about the idea of learning how to play the standards better. For most working and semi pro musicians gigs are made up of playing where people want to hear standards - weddings, dinners, etc. Why shouldn't we want to play them with greater style? I wonder what the wonderful (late) Danny Moss would have said if told 'the standards' were not applicable anymore

Hi JJ and welcome to the BR from a very hot and sunny Rugby. Sorry I'm not the one to answer your question, but I'm sure someone else will 😉

Hi JJ and a warm welcome. The Napier University Jazz Summer School may be of interest. The course runs from Mon 28 July - Fri 1st August. Prices; ?300/150 concessions.

You can phone for details 0131 455 3352 or email [email protected]

I got these details from the programme for this years Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival. The Jazz Fest runs from Friday 25 July - Sunday 3rd August. www.edinburghjazzfestival.co.uk

If you want to come to the sunny South-East in August, you could try Jazz Academy (http://www.jazzacademy.co.uk/academy.htm)

Run by Michael Garrick, usually has Martin Hathaway on sax who's a damn fine player.

I went to the Xmas course last year, and the 6 day summer course is 17-23 August.
