Yes - that's a hangover from how the letters were written with square-nibbed quill pens, both the natural and flat symbols are really versions of a 'b'

The flat symbol (which originally could only be a b-flat, there were no others until much later) is a minuscule b (minuscule as in the font style). It indicated the 'soft' b needed to avoid the tritone between b and f.

Hi there!

If you google in something about Modes in Music you will find that phrygian is one of the modes (scales). Say with the scale of C Major - C D E F G A B C if you play 8 notes in a row (using only the notes listed) it will produce a different mode according to which note you start on. C to C is the Ionian mode; D to D is the Dorian mode; E to E is the Phrygian mode and so on (Lydian, Myxolydian, Aeolian & Locrian make up the rest - Aeolian is the same as a Natural Minor scale). Hence there are are 7 modes for each major scale, as it were.

The Phrygian scale in this example (C Major) is E F G A B C D E which differs from both E major and E minor in notes and sound.
