Home studio Program- mac & PC compatible..

I'm starting work on a recording project with one of my buddies and it's just struck me- I'm PC and he's Mac. Are there any basic home studio programs that are going ot allow us to throw files between each other? Ideally one we can download as a freebie or a 30 day trial version. We're not needing anything with lots of bells and whistles- just record function & sequencing...
