There is another D that he just touched on near the end. That is the regular D fingering with the palm D instead of the octave key. It brings the sharpness down and takes away some of D's "hooty" quality. It works well for long tones.

That guy is cheesy.

He had several appearances on top of the pops, several hits and helped jazz clarinet remain in peoples consciousness for 60 years. The clips you find on youtube are from prime time television.

At his height he brought over many fine forgotten musicians for us to enjoy and helped keep the trad revival going.

I think my problem with him is when he enters ballad mode. In The Entertainers he sets out fine but at around 13 min his is in that mode. I can't help it but I don't like it.

Very true, well said Colin. I learned to play "Stranger on the Shore", not because I particularly feel an emotion for it now, but I know it well and it's quite a good one to pick up and play because it gives me a sense of achievement at my level and being so familiar with it you can give it more of yourself.

In the right circumstances you can use the palm keys at the top of the lower octave instead of crossing the break. Intonation needs to be considered, but it can be useful for fast passages or for consistency of timbre within a phrase. Here's a video demonstration:

I have a concert with a new Big Band next weekend and of all the new numbers, Hay Burner (Nestico/Basie) has been by far the most challenging for me to play. After practicing almost daily for 2 weeks, I've pretty much got it nailed .... except for one bar where there's a quick switch from a trill on second octave F#/F to a trill on D/C# . No matter which key variations I tried, I couldn't find a way to make the switch fast enough.

From the video I discovered I could use the palm D key for a lower D (new to me). I tried it out and guess what? This is the perfect solution for making the switch quickly and using the palm D key for the trill D/C#.
