Hi all, hope you can help

Im absolutely obsessed with Maceo Parker and the way the brass section sounds in all those classic james brown tracks

In particular i'm interested in the voicings of the stabs

you know the ones that sound in tune with the track but at the same time sound like a shriek or a squeal

im guessing some sort of extended chord with some wierd notes at the top but im a bit of a beginner

I produce electronic music and have spent years sampling these little pups (sorry folks)

Now i want to go a bit further and record my own or use those same voicings with other sounds

can anyone help me?

or maybe point me in the direction of a website or book covering this stuff?

any help gratefully received

In ascending pitch order try this.

3, #11, b7, 9 (so in C, play E, F#, Bb, D)

it's quite a fulfilling stab over a 'Dominant 7' chord.

you can try experimenting with different types of 7, 3 and 9s. flat 9s at the top sound awesome. Also diminished chords as stabs are good when used over suitable harmony.

I don't know if this is something Maceo does, I don't think there is anything specific to Maceo with voicings.

Check out Pete's theory pages where he mentions voicing for brass sections a few times, and has some helpful bits about when voicing with upper extensions (how to avoid them clashing with the melody etc)
