Tenor necks

Does anyone have any idea why tenor necks are curved the way they are? I was thinking about that today, and I realized I had no idea what the extra curving does. It doesn't save space, like the crook on a bari, for example. Might it warm the sound a bit, or something?

It does save space, if it was like an alto, the right hand would be uncomfortably low for smaller people.

it does save a few inches which makes all the difference.

also if it was the same lenth but straigher then the sax would be further away from the body.

would be like holding a straight neck c melody
