Has anyone tried these mouthpieces? Are they any good? How do they compare to the Yamaha Student ones?

Just looking for a budget mouthpiece that will be better than the standard one I got with my Tenor.

Any advice please.

Many over here in the States love them for the money. I bought one each of the A5 and B5 facing/bore for A/T/B to test out for the heck of it (they are cheap!).

I find them a bit harsh and edgy, and the low end isn't as responsive or warm as I would like. Although they have virtually no baffle (actually a concave baffle at the tip), they sound like a quieter version of a high baffle, rock style MP to me.

Conversely, the older, now ersatz, Rico Metalite models (which were a higher baffle piece) had more warmth and a better lower end (albeit quite a bit louder) to my mind, strange as that may seem.

I suppose for the money they are a nice deal (the table, tip and rails are quite consistent, if not a bit thick in the case of the latter two), but I am not enamored.

I think the Morgan Protone is a FAR better, low cost, yet hand finished mouthpiece for just a bit more money-even with the limited facings choice- ie exactly one. 😉

Just one man's opinion.

you do get what you pay for ..and a bargin is only one if your happy with the outcome..

my advice is go to a shop, try all they have, if you can't afford the one you want.. save for it..

remember the MP is your contact with the sax..

I have a Rico Royal C7 from my first go at the tenor in '92. This particular one is a much bigger mpc than the Meyer I now have and my embouchure took a bit of adjustment to tighten up on the Meyer. I'd say it's a definite improvement from the one that came with the horn and if that's all you're looking for it'd be a decent purchase. If you want a mpc that'll be a more or less permanent fixture in the future I'd agree with mfox and save for a better one.

I got a Rico Royal tenor mouthpiece a while back, when I was looking for something as an upgrade to the no-name plastic mpc that came with the horn.

They are very cheap compared to other mpcs, and pretty good for the money. I assumed they were discontinued as the guy in the shop had to root around in the bottom of his box of bits to find it - I bought it on spec as I was only in the shop for reeds and got talking about mouthpieces. They are made of a plastic called Graftonite - I imagine no relation to the plastic used in Grafton saxophones.

My only real criticism of it is that it isn't very loud, but it makes the right noise. Since getting a 5c I can say that the Yamaha mpc is better, but a bit more expensive, but neither is a match for my favourite Selmer Soloist.

Cheers, Bob

Bobby,
The Metalite (which is more highly thought of) was discontinued awhile ago. These were dark gray plastic with a pebble finish. The current production replacement is the Graphtonite, which is a standard black plastic, is still in production.

Both were designed by the late Arnold Brilhart, but nothing like the vintage Tonaline/ Eboline models etc.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
