Reeds Oz reeds

I seem to remember seeing some reeds advertised somewhere, probably in one of these online shops, called Australian summat. Has anyone used them at all? As I remember they're relatively cheap too, is this an indication of their quality?

ooh ooh no, Bobby, they're my current reed of choice! Couldn't recommend them more.

Take a look at:
Reeds Direct- "Manufactured from hand-selected cane grown on South Australian plantations, the Reeds Australia Vintage range has an unfiled cut and its sound is powerful and brilliant. Like fine wines, the year of harvest is indicated on the box. Available in filed or unfiled cut".

...and at ?12.95 for a box of 5 they're not so cheap.

Having tried -oh- so many different ones I finally chose these mainly for the 'colour' of the sound. To my ears 'brown and woody' with a nice edge. The consistency is amazing. There is rarely a 'dud' in a box. You could have a rum and cola... or you could have a Havanna Club Especiale and coke. They're 'that' different.

I think that's them Jools - thinking they were cheaper because I didn't realise the price was for 5 rather than 10...

Oooh dangerous thing to say!!! I'm getting quite superstitious about statements like that, having proudly proclaimed the soveriegnty of V16s last year just prior to playing at the Shambala Festival- only to find myself sat backstage in a field with a box of.... guess what... 100% dud V16s!

I've been finding more inconsistency with the Superials of late, or maybe I'm getting more fussy. Or playing better :erm:

A bit of both I reckon Bobby. I've known a few pro players who could 'over-ride' most inadequacies in equipment and probably get a decent sound from a leaky old student horn with a split reed held on with rubber bands!.

However, the further back down the tree you are, the more help I guess you need. Having half decent reeds is part of the battle.

And, Nachoman, yup that is a dangerous thing to say, however - let me further qualify it by saying that out of 6 boxes I have ever bought so far, none of them have been dead. A couple have been less than great, but certainly none that were just 'sticks'. Unlike some popular brands I could name. Going back to another thread somewhere... buying one reed from a shop is pointless. You have to get a box at a time. Just in case.

I am drawn to these reeds by Jools description of them being 'brown and woody, with edge' even though my playing is probably closer to being brown and sticky. I'm just off to Oxford, I wonder if Roger has any in at Allegro..... more later, prob'ly
