Meyer Tip Openings

I have just been looking at Ebonite mouthpieces for Tenor and noticed something about Meyer tip opening numbering. I already have about ten Tenor mouthpieces and I know that different manufacturers use their own numbering systems for tip openings.
Meyer seem to be very different in their marking, for example their Tenor number 7 is only about a 5* Otto Link or 5* Lawton.
To get a similar opening to a 7* Lawton, you would need a Meyer 10.
Why is there such a big difference with Meyer?

I think there's a lot of differences across manufacturers, some use letters instead of numbers e.g. Selmer, and as you point out numbers are only relative to other piece
from the same maker. I have a Meyer 8 for alto which is only .001 different from a Selmer F.

There was a link posted recently here to a comparison table which unfortunately didn't work when I tried it.

Sometimes you wonder why there isn't some kind of industry standard where all mouthpiece openings are given in thou, which would make it easier to compare, even if there are other factors involved in mouthpiece suitability.

wouldn't get too hung up on these markings, just means Meyer doesn't make a wide range of tip openings s'all as compared to say Yanagisawa or Dukoff (which is probably kinda commercially sensible given that most tenor players must find it easiest to get a good sound and be able to control a mpc with a 80-110/1000ths of an inch t.o).

Thank you for your comments and links to charts. It does seem odd that the manufacturers don't set a simple standard numbering device for the tip openings. Never mind, we get bye.
