Take a triad, say Cmaj.
C-E-G
Remove the Fith and replace it with a tension.
C-Ab-G
Add an 11th or a ninth.
C-D-G-Ab
I like to do this. It removes the 7th arppegios that are used so much. Alos, I use the tension note as a root note and move around chromatically. I think it sounds verry nice.
e.g.
Over Cmaj7:.........Ab---C-D-E-D-Ab---
Going to Am7........A---C-D-E-D--C-A--
To Dm7.................Ab---C-D-E-D-A-Ab-
G13.......................G---B---C---D------
