arrangement question

I started doing a jazz arrangement (transcribed the chords and melody, worked out some other counter melodic material) and I woulld like to get out of the short score I have it in, but the task of figuring out how do dole out the notes to the horns (3 trumpets, 4 bones, 5 saxes) is so daunting. why have 3 different trumpet parts? are they in unisen most of the time? or do they take turns resting?

p.s. what is the range of a fluegal (sp?) horn, and how does it transpose?

Trumpets work very well in unison, or in harmony so you can do either. I recommend getting a jazz orrchestration book such as Composing for jazz Orchestra by William Russo. That will keep you busy for a long time.

Flugelhorn is in Bb, so it transposes a major 2nd up, just like a trumpet. I'm pretty sure it has the same effective range as a trumpet, too. If I'm not mistaken, though, it can play in the lower register more easily and prettily than a trumpet (it sounds kinda like a French horn in the middle register).
