Your own language to English translation tips

The Café is an English language forum. Café members from 35 countries have English (mostly UK or American) as a first language. But many Café members live in countries that have other languages as their official language. Many of these members feel confident reading and writing on the Café in English. We are an international forum and welcome members from all countries so these tips are for members who feel less confident reading and writing in English.

Reading on the Café

All internet browsers - including Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari - include translation options from English to your native language. You might need to translate at different levels (the Café as a whole, a forum, a thread). But at the thread level, the whole thread is translated at once.

Writing (posts, responses) on the Café

There is currently no tool that translates any posts or responses that you write in your own language to English directly on the Café. Instead, it’s best to use a free translation tool. Whether or not you use Google or Chrome, Google’s online translation tool is currently the easiest (free) online translation tool. Though there are alternatives. How do these tools work? You just type in text in your native language, select translate to English and copy and paste the English translation into any Café post or response.

Rules etc.

We try to make the Café as user friendly as possible, but we do need to have rules. We don't want to tell people what they can and can't do but occasionally we do need to step in when someone acts in a less than respectful manner. Although the rule are quite comprehensive, we think they cover all eventualities so nothing is left to "unwritten rules." That way everyone knows where they stand.

We've tried to make the forum as intuitive to use as possible, while being a very comprehensive resource. Please don't hesitate to ask us if anything is unclear, or let us know of anything we could do better to make the forum easier to navigate and use.
