Tenor Viol's musings

Unfortunately, the conjunction is not visible form my house or even the road outside, it is too low down and the ground to the west is higher than me. So I had to take a walk up the little hill behind me (the quickest way of getting there is to drive a little way down the bypass and park up then there's a footpath up to the top, otherwise its a slog through deep mud and brambles...

From there, there is a reasonable 360 degree panorama, which includes a view of the distant mountains of Snowdonia.

This was the set-up I used last night - a zoom lens set to 150mm f/2.8 ISO 400. This photo of the set-up has caught the conjunction - so you can get it with a phone camera. I would have liked to have taken a shot with one of my telescopes, but not practical to get the gear up the hill without a team of people.

I haven't had any clear weather for months, so no further chances of trying out my new telescope. There was a brief clear spell one morning last week, the Moon was past 3rd quarter, which meant that the Moon was quite high up in the SW. I wanted a decent sized image of the Moon, which means a lot of focal length. My new 'scope us a "short focus" refractor - just 550mm. I got out my 40 year-old 'scope, last used in the early 1990s... it has a focal length of 2,000mm. This means that an image of the Moon fills the frame. Below is one of the images I took. It's cut down as full-size it's over 60mb....

The "You're a star" rating seemed very appropriate.

PS There wasn't one that said "I like your moon" !

Part 1.

For my photography course I will be taking pics of me playing instruments in slightly unusual contexts (long story, don't ask... unless you're desperate for an explanation!).

So various instruments came out to play for some test shots yesterday afternoon...

Start with sop...

I forgot to do alto... so next up is tenor...

Then it's the big guns...

Recent weather here in Shropshire has been colder than is commonly the case in recent winters. The last week it's been below 0C (32f) all the time. Yesterday, I went for a walk along the canal and it was frozen in places. With windchill it was -10C yesterday (14f).

Today I got to see various Café members on the Zoom session. The bad news is that they got to see and hear me... Today I've been working on more photography projects. This one has turned into me photographing me looking out of the conservatory. The camera is outside. It required some improvised lighting as I don't have any studio lighting kit. So, I added a 300W uplighter. To get some of the light into the image I made an ad-hoc reflector by scrunching up and taping pieces of tinfoil together, taping them to the roof and using that to bounce some light in. The reason for scrunching the foil first is to make the light less directional.

This is the set-up.
