SOTM December 2022
I’m going to attempt to put up 2 songs (!) as I had one all picked out for November, but it was replaced at the last minute. So here it is. A Christmas song to follow.
Stolen Moments (Oliver Nelson)
I picked this one out for SOTM November as a) it doesn’t appear to have been done before b) there’s something very November-ish about the overall mood and chord changes, c) I have the music ready! and d) I like it! There’s something about it that definitely grows on you after you listen to a few takes of it, even if you think “not my thing!” the first time round.
The piece is somewhat unconventional in that the solos are on a more-or-less conventional 12 bar blues structure, but the head is a 16 bar melody [for geeks and nerds only: in an eight-six-two pattern. ;-]
The piece first appeared as "The Stolen Moment" on the 1960 album Trane Whistle by Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, largely written and co-arranged by Oliver Nelson.
The first recording of the song to gain attention was the version on Nelson's own 1961 album, The Blues and the Abstract Truth.

Featuring a very “busy” trumpet solo by Freddie Hubbard, an amazing Eric Dolphy flute solo, then Nelson himself brilliantly understated on tenor (is my woodwind teacher bias coming through here ;-), wrapping up with Bill Evans on piano before the final head/ chorus.

Plenty more takes out there on youtube, some excellent, some not to my taste at all. I’m going to give this one honourable mention, even though no saxophones are involved. Excellent musicality on display:
