Non standard shape/size Pearl replacement.

I'm thinking a jeweller or a crafter might be the person to talk to for this kind of thing. They run adult education classes in making jewellery at my local college. Maybe there's something like that local. It might be worth visiting a craft fair and talk to some of the stall holders to find a specialist.

Very clever but not as beautiful as mine! Going to look at a Selmer 1932 Cigar cutter tomorrow. Are they good players?
Depends on who you ask. I have met a few jazz players who love them. The intonation can be a bit quirky on some of the early Selmers including the Supers (Cigar Cutter), Radio Improved, and the Balanced Action. The intonation is really quirky on the Modele 22 and 26.

There was a report that I vaguely remember reading that said they were the first "true" Selmer? Whatever that means! Got a chance to acquire one for £800ish but it may have been relacquered. Any comments? I know absolutely nothing about them!

This thread is of great interest to me since I have in the shop a Conn New Wonder Virtuoso Deluxe tenor for restoration that has pearl keys throughout some of which are broken and need replacing. The one that concerns me the most is the one that is pearl on the RH thumbrest that bends to fit the contour of the rest. Does anyone know if a sheet of mother of pearl can be bent?

Don't think I've ever seen that before (any pics). I think the powder stuff mentioned earlier might be the answer. Perhaps some little pieces could be cut and glued in place then sanded down?

Let's see. That would be around $1300 U.S. I checked Terapeak and they have been averaging around $2000 the last 12 months over here so that sounds as if it is a good deal. Personally I see more of a collector value in them than a great playing Selmer.

Funny you should mention this, I was looking at a modele 22 earlier in the year and discussed it with a tech I use, he said, generally they are not as sought after as the "Golden era Selmers" i.e. cigar cutters onwards, and his opinion was also they were very nice saxes and the first true Selmer.

Ciggy cutters sound nice and are interesting but I`d class the SBA as the earliest "Player" Selmer and even that is moving into collector country . if you want a good example of a giggable regular player Selmer which doesn`t cost a re-mortgage to buy (like a MkVI) , doesn`t have obscure keywork (like a MkVII) or you`d be terrified to damage (BA/SBA) then you can`t go far wrong with an SA80 ..

... by coincidence...

Yes

SA80 Alto, 1983-ish
SA80 II Tenor 1990-ish

They seem to do the job

There's always a GAS itch lurking beneath the surface but lack of funds and faith in the quality of what I've got keep the buying urges under control
