Jazz Monk and Charlie Rouse

Very respectable creative jazz of its time. Great to see Monk at the keys, not just hear him. I mentioned in another post that I saw Monk and Rouse at Shelly's Manhole in .LA. in 1972. By then, he was far lower energy than he is here.

I love listening and watching Monk, if I'm feeling down he usually puts a smile back on my face.

I think Charlie Rouse is seriously underrated as a player. It‘s probably no coincidence that he was the only sax player capable of playing with Monk for many years - Monk‘s comping must have been difficult to deal with for the soloists.

I've written a tune that was very much influenced by Monk because I was into his blues like Blue Monk or Straight No Chaser. Blue Monk is very playable on the guitar. But Monk's sense of time and feel are uniquely quirky, it's not only the changes or melody that make him who he is.
