Have to say, that my personal opinion is, I'd rather not. I had a quick search through preferences to see if I could remove it, as soon as it came up. I will have another look.

I've already switched my flag off.

Problem is, there are so many flags for Antarctica that it's hard to pick one I wouldn't mind wearing as a T-shirt. The Nazi flag (ugh!) is one of the options, though clearly a non-starter:-

Flags of Antarctica

As a second choice I'd settle for the flag of Ruritania - a country I visit nightly, in my dreams:-

Welcome to Ruritania

The Whitney Smith design is beautiful in its simplicity. And as the Wikipedia page implies, it's not 'flaggy'. I'd go for that one!

Hey everyone! This is not about flags as patriotic symbols - it's just bit of info to show where people currently are, not where they are from.

It's useful for instance if I take my mistress away for a weekend In Paris, my wife can see the French flag and knows where I am.

Oh, wait....

I like them. I noticed them last night and thought it a nice addition.

I think it would be cool if they were peoples home vs where they are logged in from.
that being said, its not a big deal, just a small preference.

So WHEN you manage to log in from that location you'll get that flag
Anyway, what do they look like ?
your IP address isn't always the same as your location - mine's currently in Sufflok about 100 miles away from where I live, but it changes according to the whim of my ISP.. If I changed my IP address or used a VPN I could be from anywhere and I'm sure with a bit of work I could appear to be from San Francisco where the United Federation Of Planets has their Council headquarters.
Narnia is in Umbria, halfway between Rome and Assisi - the rest you can google - images of the flags you can find online
