As the title says, I'm new to Cafe Saxophone. I've been playing alto sax since 5th grade, and started to play bari in 7th grade. I'm in 8th grade now, and am looking forward to getting better at improvisation and other techniques here. Cheers!

Hi JacobN!

A Big Welcome to Cafe Sax from the Welsh contingent down here in Skabertawe. I thought of getting a baritone but just attached my tenor mouthpiece to the Central Heating System. I play fairly well like that but can occasionally blow hot and cold. So, 8th Grade must mean that you are approx 14yo - do you play the Bari on a stand or are you a very big youngster?

Look forward to getting to know you over the coming months.
Kind regards

@Tom: I'm 13yo and 6 feet tall, so I just use a neck strap.

@Sunray: The bari is my favorite right now because I get some melody in jazz band, and I get to help the other bari that plays

So, too big for a soprano, then! In UK 8th Grade translates as Year 8 in school, or Year 2 secondary school as used to be.

Yeah, definitely too big for a soprano! If I could play any sax for band, then I'd want to play the contrabass, almost entirely because it's so absurdly large. The largest sax I've played was a bass sax at a group class for band camp. I got to play from the sopranino all the way down to the bass!

Take a look at his tubax as well..... To play these in a marching band I think you'd need to put wheels on them.... I saw them at an exhibition a couple of years ago - absolutely massive, but I didn't play them. Not as big as the alphorn that I did manage to coax a couple of notes out of....

Really must get down to Epplesheim's shop one day.

Hey, stop that, you guys! I'm 53, about 6'5", and I just bought a sopranino from ilovebech, who's nearly as tall as me, and, I think, a bit older. I hope you're not suggesting I'll look silly playing it.

Welcome, Jason, and good luck with your saxophonic enterprises, whatever size instruments you choose to play.

It seems like so many of the senior members on Cafe Sax are from Europe...
I've gotta go over to Eppelsheim's shop one day once I'm old enough to afford it!
