Hey guys,

Gonna play „Satin Doll“ with a small ensemble (Tenor) and would love to check out your favourite renditions of it, if you have them.
It’s weird that youtube only shows some really good performances after digging deep and not among the first few suggestions like it should be 😅

Looking forward to what will (hopefully) be shared and many thanks in advance !!

Here are a few that I found. I agree with Colin. There's nothing like the original!

The Duke himself and Ella Fitzgerald:

And a nice one from SWR Big Band (alto)

It's a great tune! We played a simple arrangement of it by Eric Osterling last year. I posted a video of us on a thread entitled "Must-Learn-To Project!" You can hear my weak four-measure solo there. I don't know what skill level you need, but you should be able to find something that you'd like. JW Pepper seems to have a nice selection.

Thanks for sharing, I‘m still at the beginning of my journey but doing quite well. My teacher already handed me sheetmusic. This will be my first taste of free improvisation in an ensemble setting. I did experiment over Take Five with the Fminor Blues Scale (after I learned Paul Desmonds most iconic Solo first) which was tons of fun but thats about the extent of my experience so far 😅

So many great ones to choose from but I'm with Rhys, Johnny Hodges on Blues a Plenty for me.

The original recording of "Take five" is in Eb minor as far as I'm aware.

Here is a transcription which can be bought for Eb, Bb, F, bass clef and concert pitch instruments.

Interestingly this very recording has appeared on some albums and been attributed to Ben Webster on tenor. I think that especially at the start where Hodges plays low down you can almost understand that mistake, but listening to the whole solo the style and sound are unmistakeable. Webster was certainly influenced by Hodges when they played together in the Ellington Orchestra.
