Mouthpieces Zinner mpc

The older ones have a good reputation - better than the new ones.

By coincidence Milandro has one of the older ones (an alto) up for sale on SOTW. Send him a message if you are interested.

I bet they can, looks like a leak waiting to happen - saying that though, I`d suspect the same of Microtuner necks but you don`t hear it mentioned

I borrowed one of these several years ago, it was one of he older Strathon Adjuastatone one's, made before Zinner took over making them.
There's a slider on the top of the mouthpiece with a piece of stiff wire going through a rubber seal attached to a movable wedge baffle inside. It's the rubber seal that seems to be the problem with leaking, the one I tried might have had a leak, we were never quite sure, but it was was from the early 80's, so was about 20 years old when I tried it. I think the owner tried some candle wax on the seal and that may have helped
I found that it was better having the baffle nearer the back than the front, but to be honest I didn't get on with it much, although to be fair I wasn't used to high baffle mouthpieces at that time and was mostly playing a Runyon with the removable spoiler removed.
There are photos of Ornette Coleman using one in 1974 and there are other pro players who've used them -

When it did play well was it a very good mouthpiece?
I didn't think so at the time, but remembering back 9 or 10 years it isn't easy to quantify why...
I didn't like the way it responded and the tone was too bright for what I wanted at the time. I'd be curious to try one again, I 've found that my tastes have changed a lot and some of the mouthpieces I didn't used to like (eg Claude Lakey, Berg Larsen) I now find quite playable and the one's I played back then are gathering dust.
There are definitely players who do like Strathon's and say nice things about them on SOTW, but people say good and bad things about everything on SOTW.
Richard Elliot, Tom Scott and Klaus Doldinger are past and present users of Strathons.
Zinner make a lot of other mouthpieces as well - http://www.hans-zinner.de/html/body_saxophone_mouthpieces.html - which in my limited experience are quite decent

I had one of these back about 10 years ago, bought it for very little and sold it for very little, wish i had have kept it now because the old ones are fetching good money,it played quite well if i remember but it wasn't what i was looking for,i remember that Herb Geller used to play one and he sounded great on it.

Thanks Altissimo, always listen to your comments and I think there is too much to go wrong for that money when I can get something that is definitely recommended and consistent. I don't need any extra hurdles to overcome!
