Your Latest Trick

this is a sax solo at the end of Dire Straits - Your Latest Trick.
It starts just as Mark Knopfler finishes singing (Hence you can just hear him at the start)

I think I may make it my next project, to work out how to play this, and play it from memory (both of which I have never done before)
Does anyone think they'd be able to make me the backing track? I wouldn't know where to start.
thanks

Mandy there's a great version on Karaoke version You can remove the vocals and the sax if you want, in fact you could download it in three different formats. One with vocals and sax, one without vocals and with sax and one without vocal or sax. Once you have bought the track, you can download it as many times as you like, just download it differently each time.

Just to emulate the sound of this life-changing solo, I spent a HUGE amount of money in reeds, mouthpieces and saxophones, only ended when I got a 5 digits MkVI and a Guardala MB (that now would be worth a fortune). I still have MB reeds, somewhere.

I then started a musical detox process aimed to develop my own personality.

"Lots of sharps - which is what you get if you play with pesky guitars."

There's a transpose button under the track, so you can cheat. Although I prefer to play in whatever key the track comes in, and use it as a kind of scale practice.

I also had a "relationship" with Knopfler&Brecker but on a lower level. Lots of rocksax players tried to play this song. But there was just Mikael Brecker! Another Knopfler song that made impact on me was "Going Home" (theme from the movie Local Hero). Even Clarence Clemons released a Springsteen single with an instrumetal (or jazz if you prefer😉) song called "Summer On Signal Hill". B-side on on the "Savin' Up" single.

Nice to hear this song again and a good sample of Breckers versatilty. Mandy, we are looking forward to hear your version.

Don't hold your breath, folks, it could be months....

I was very lucky many years ago on a 1 off thing to actually play this tune (latest trick) with Mr.Knopfler (also a fellow Geordie and i was a student at that time in Newcastle) so it has kinda stuck with me and yes it too made a lasting impression on my sax journey so i 'totally get ya' but it has been a while since i played it but i am sure it will come back fairly quick (brushing off the cobwebs 🙂) so if you wish i can record a version of the 'sax theme' and sax solo after the vocals to a drum or metronome backing a little bit slower so you can copy it to memory, if you like?

edit: i just noticed Rhysonsax posted the melody for you (good man) but i also see you want to do it by memory and personally i think it will stick with you better this way rather than reading it, certainly worked for me doing it by memory this way.
**Also if it is of use to anyone else wanting to learn the solo and/or sax theme to latest trick then i could maybe even post a version (slowed down and/or at full speed) on the open forum here for people to download , just a thought.

I found a Midi so if you want a slowed down BT for your purposes. Easy to upload to SC for download.

no BT needed, i can record it with a drum metronome so it is stripped back to basics for MandyH to pick up just the sax and without the extra harmony colouring of a backing track.
If you want me to do this for you MandyH let me know and when i get a little time i will be happy to do it for you.

Ian
