Mouthpieces Yet another mouthpiece question

My setup is a a Selmer Super 80 series II Alto with an ebonite Otto Link 7.
My favoured style is Jazz - preferably cool jazz.

Last year I bought a Bronze Lawton 7BB but have hardly played the Lawton since I got it.

I am happy with the Link, but like many people - I like to try different things.

I find the Lawton to be very loud and brash.

Now the question. Should I sell my Lawton and have a try some other darker mpcs to itch my current scratch, or should I hold on to the Lawton?
One side of me says keep the Lawton, you might grow to like it in the future.
The other side of me says - it is too loud and brash for what you want - sell it and either keep the money or try some more mouthpieces.

So, that is my quandary - what should I do?

If I sell it what sort of money should ask for - I believe that they are about £220 new.
If I do sell it then 10% goes to Pete's charity.

David,

If you want to play with a 'cool' sound then the BB model is not for you. The BB, according to Bill Lewington, has power and edge ideal for R&B or Rock. If you like Lawton mouthpieces try the plain number.

Hi David

I'm a confirmed Lawton fan. Even I would be inclined to agree that the Lawton BB mouthpieces are pretty raucous. I used to have an 8BB and sold it as the tone was just too much.

Given what you say about your taste, my guess is that you'll never like it. It's a very expensive piece to just have sitting in a drawer. The good news is that there's a thriving used market for them, and it should sell easily. If you stick it on eBay you should get £120-£160 for it, which is a far higher proportion of the new price than you usually get for a used mouthpiece.

I have been trying it again this morning and I think it is going to have to go. I realy do not know what I was thinking when I bought it.

Thanks Colin and Jon for your confirmation.

I will put it on the for sale section.

I'm a very big Lawton fan and I must have about 15 of them for SATB in ebonite, various metals and lots of chamber/baffle types.

The model I am least keen on is the standard BB as it's not very flexible. I have the ICON BB for alto and tenor which have a different design of baffle and chamber. The ICONs are significantly more flexible, although still bright and edgy.

There should be a good market out there for your BB from people looking for power and brightness.

Thing that bugs me is trying them out in the shop. Nearly always small rooms with bad acoustics (hell, howarth's has a special place in my heart yet I still hate that the practise room is filled with the hum from their server bank).

I resolved to always take them gone for a week where you can really get to grips with them and make your choice.

If I were you I'd get rid, but essentially you need to be blunt and honest with yourself about if you're going to use it.

I had a bit of a shock yesterday. Cleared out my childhood bedroom (i'm 20, and a student, so while not living at home I still have no intention of moving back) which has all my stuff. And I just don't need any of it. Junk and total crap that I've not taken out of the drawer for 5years.

Stacks of magazines, old computer bits and endless cabling and adapter plugs for things I don't even have anymore. Broken sets missing bits, scraps of notes and text books from school I'll never open again.

At base value, all i need is my bed, my desk, computer and instruments.

I've booked a skip.

It's on the devils junkyard. I will be going to try some more mpcs once it's sold. Suggestions are welcome as to what I should try. I am looking for a dark sound.

I like my ebonite otto link 7 so may well decide in the end to save my money, but, the itch is there!

Start playing that tenor! You know it makes sense :w00t: >:)

Alas it still sits there in the corner - unloved and unplayed. Perhaps that will be the next to go

Blimey if that's the next thing to go just let me know. I'm gagging for one of those but can't quite stretch to a new one. Also congrats, you've got me to actually post. I've been reading this excellent forum for a few months now and consider it an absolute font of knowledge. Quite brilliant.

Now there is an idea. It's a standard Lacquer finish with the Italian pads. I have an Otto Link 6* with it. It tends to give me back ache so selling it is a real possibility. Drop me a pm if you would be interested in buying it. I would of course be making another donation to the charity if I do sell.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
