I've been learning to play the sax since December 2024; started with a YAS-25 but now have a YTS-25 which I prefer. Coming along very well according to my teacher, reading the dots now without translating and finding my fingers do the right thing, got a few tunes under my belt, a bit hesitant but getting better each time.
I've tried hard not to succumb to GAS but felt that the 4C mpc which came with the tenor was a bit restrictive. Been doing lots of long tone practice with crescendo and diminuendo and found that I couldn't get very loud without either breaking up or just stopping the note. I don't believe it's my technique so I gambled on a replacement mpc.
I read as many threads as I could find and although tempted by the WIndcraft Etude and Bari Esprit - both inexpensive with good reviews - I went for a genuine new Yamaha 5C, one step up and a 'known-known'.
It arrived this morning and I played it in my practice session. It took a minute or so to get used to it, really had to ensure my breath control was correct. I dropped from RR2.5 to a RR2 which made it easier and was impressed. Lovely sound, high notes above the octave were rounder, sweeter and the low notes richer. What amazed me was that I could play much softer and quieter, and in turn louder and 'brassier'. I was not expecting such a difference considering the minor difference in tip size etc.
When I'd finished, MrsC, who didn't know about the mpc change, said I sounded very nice today, 'lush and mellow' as she put it!
