I talked to a rocksax friend the other day and he want to buy a ”new” sax. He asked me if he shold buy an older (vintage) or a modern one. I sudjested that he should look for a modern sax because right now there are not so many good older saxes for sale her in Sweden. He can spend 15000 s e k (1 £ = 10,00 s e k ) + the money he get for his Yamaha student tenor. I told him that he should spare some thousands (s e k !) for a service. I think a service at a tech is around 1000-2000 s e k: This is what we found:

Yamaha YTS-62S, 15000 s e k. Nice one.
Selmer Super Action 80, 17 000 s e k.
Buffet Crampon Dynaction -55, 13 000 s e k.
Selmer Super Action 80 serie ll, 15 000 s e k. BL.
Yanagisawa T-990 U, 16 000 s e k. Silverplated body and gl keys. Underslung octavekey
Yanagisawa 880 15 000 s e k. Underslung octavekey. I owned one like this for some years ago. Very nice sax, but I missed my old Martin tenors … so I sold it.
Jupiter XO ul 17 000 s e k. Nice. Like new.
Yamaha YTS 62. 13 000. From early 80’s. Good horn.

And some other saxes that costs more than 20 000 s e k .

Selmer tenorsax ref. 36, 25 000 s e k.
Selmer Reference 54 Tenor 30 000 s e k. Matt Otto Link mpc, walt Johnson case. Seems to be very nice. Not much for for a horn like this!!!
P.Mauriat 66 RX Influence 24 000 s e k. Bam case + Ritter case.
SYSTEM-76 24 000 s e k
Yamaha YTS 62 22 000 s e k (bought new last year).

I also recommended to try a new Bauhaus Walstein M2 for 16 000 s e k. The dealer is just a couple of miles from our places.

We didn’t look at action sites like Ebay. Saxes above are private sales. I think it’s a good selection of saxes? BTW, I have never seen that many Selmer MK VI for sale here in Sweden as I can see today.

Hi Thomas

An observation. Saxes are expensive in Sweden. Would it be better to take a trip to the UK or Holland, where prices seem a bit lower? Possibly also Germany (Kev?).

Of that list, the ones I'd go for would be the silver T990 or the early 1980s YTS62.

Hi Jon,

Yes, the prices seems to be a litttle bit higher here compared to England. We talked about to fly over to Enlgand and bring a sax back. The airfares are not that high if you book a flight with Norweigan or Cimber Sterling or other low priced companies. Also a possibility.

Talking about prices on saxes. I think this is a good price. Selmer ref 54+Otto Link mpc, Meyer HR and Walt Johnson case. 30 000 s e k.

My impression is that prices here are higher than the UK at the bottom to mid end, but about the same at the higher end. Vintage stuff seems to be very expensive here as well.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
