As I am sure most of you are aware the profits from the sale of goods on Pete’s Taming the Saxophone site and donations from the yard sale, subscriptions and general donations received from our cafe members (after the forum costs are covered) are all passed on to a deserving cause.

Pete’s current chosen cause is Heaton School in Stockport; he chose to support Heaton School after researching various special needs schools in the country. Heaton will use this money and specialist equipment to allow children with severe or profound learning difficulties from the ages of 11 to 19 to access music in a way that they can’t with conventional instruments and to put on a concert in July.

Yesterday I was privileged to visit Heaton School to gain an insight in to how the donation from Pete and you our generous members is benefitting the children.

The head teacher Liz kindly gave up some of her time to show me around the school which has 94 pupils and a staffing ratio of approx 1 teacher or assistant to every 3 children. I was particularly touched by the memorial garden as Liz explained that they lost on average a child a year but this last year sadly three.

The school has a lovely atmosphere and I was welcomed in to assembly to see some of the children perform a Beatle’s number “She’s got a ticket to ride” I sat with the children and it was an emotional experience watching them throwing themselves in to the song with obvious enjoyment. Liz explained how performing gave them self confidence and she is very keen to give some of them the opportunity to perform and shine in a concert for their friends and family.

I would like to thank Pete for his generosity in running these two sites for the benefit of such a good cause and for the opportunity to visit the school on the Cafe's behalf.

It’s a good feeling knowing that in some way we have helped these children and thank you all for supporting the Cafe whether it be financially or by just taking part and making it such a friendly and informative place to visit, you really are making a difference.

For those of you close enough the musical talents of Heaton School’s pupils will be on show at their upcoming performance on Monday July 21st at 7.00pm at Stockport Town Hall where they will be playing some of the donated instruments. Tickets can be obtained from the school.

Yes there was a tear in my eye :)

Pete beat me to it with the calendar but well remembered, it will be great to see it filling up with performances.

...and I thought it was 'A Ticket to Ryde'... at least that's what we sang when visiting the Isle of Wight as a student

This year we are funding Langside School, and have almost reached the target of £5000 for various equipments.

See here:

Support the Cafe

However the really exciting news is that we are branching into a different area now and have decided to help raise money for (plus get involved in:

Gig Buddies, volunteering made easy - Gig Buddies

As well as raising money there is a lot more we can do:

  • Cafe members may want to help out as volunteers
  • I am going to try to help them expand their operations into my locality (ie Southampton area) and there may also be members her who might want to get involved in theor own areas.
The organisation is based in Brighton but are looking to expand around the country, I think this a really exciting project that we can get involved with on more levels than purely raising money.

We have reached the target for Langside, and I am going down there on Friday to deliver the cheque at a little presentation.

If any members of the Cafe want to come along you will be very welcome, just let me know on this thread.

The school is in Poole and the presentation is at 10.00 a.m.

We have donated £2000 to Springwell (details of what they did with it to come) and have earmarked £5000 from this year's fundraising for Staing Up late (Gig Buddies).

This brings our total donations this year to £12,000
