As my new Stephanhouser 700 tenor has just arrived I thought I would dig out a mouthpiece and give her a go. I just found in my basket of stuff a blank tenor mpc with a Rovner Versa lig around it. On the black mouthpiece is scratched - Saxscape...................prototype............Hudson.........100 # 124B

Is it any good and what size does that translate to? Lord knows where I got it from. It must have come with a sax I bought some time ago.

I had a Saxscape a while ago- he uses defuatl link numbering- therefore your 100 should be a 7 (100 thou). Mine- a Red River- was a really good 'piece, though ultimately too similar to my Berg 110/2. Based on my experience its certianly going to be worth taking seriously to see how it works for you

Not a bad find.

Thanks, just looked at the site and it says only 102 (equivalent to 7 opening) available in Hudson which is Berg Larsen style. Yet on the side of my Hudson it says 100 which should make it a 6 equivalent (or still 7 according to Jules). Will give it a go against my PPT, Yani 6, Selmer and Otto Link later..

Actually I feel rather awkward as it had a Rovner Eddie Daniels lig around it as well. That is £35 and the mouthpiece itself is a $250 piece. I have no idea where it came from! It is definitely a tenor mpc as Saxscape don't make one for an alto.

the prototypes were sold via ebay and didn't sell for $250 - as he says on the website they were models where he'd experimented a bit with the machining process and not fully polished the body of the piece to be sold at full price.
So it plays like a $250 mouthpiece, but probably only sold for $100 or whatever the winning bid was on ebay. He's not got any prototypes for sale on at the moment - http://www.ebay.com/sch/saxscape/m.html?item=160890569126&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562
I'm waiting for the day when he starts doing alto prototypes
It should be a good mouthpiece and is likely to be better than a lot Berg Larsens

From the Saxscape website - "To everyone who's bought a prototype or b-stock on eBay -- you've gotten a hell of a deal!"
Some on eBay....http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_f...+mouthpiece&_nkw=saxscape+mouthpiece&_sacat=0

Just tried the Saxscape with a Vandoren 2.5 and my teeth nearly vibrated out of my mouth! I have not played for some time and the Step tenor is very loud. Given that the mouthpiece is new to me as well I think I shall give it some more time later. It was easy to blow though....

I've got Saxscape Downtown prototype which I was using for its power and projection until I got a PPT which has, for me a wider and more flexible response. Not sure how I came across it either! I think I must have done a swap.

I've got a Saxscape Uptown Live tenor piece and it is quite a monster.
Quite lively you might say.
Excellent description Andrew......"quite a monster"! It is infectious to have an easy playimg mpc on a brand new tenor sat in front you all day! Especially when you haven't played for so long due to injury! I will put the PPT on tomorrow and see how that compares!

Would still like to know where it came from! I never bought it and have only owned two tenors previously and I know that it never came with them!!

From the mouthpiece fairy of course, you must have been a good boy!

Response from Ken Barry -

Hi James,

Thanks very much for the invite, and the interesting conversations there! Frankly I wasn't aware of this sax forum! I'd been on SOTW since way back in the olden days, and alt.music.saxophone before that, in the previous millenium.

Right now I've got too much going on but as soon as things settle down I will be more than happy to hang out at the Cafe Sax.

Cheers,
Ken

I played an XtraDark prototype for a while, I think I read somewhere that the majority of the prototypes were all produced as .102's. Another thing I seem to remember (could be wrong, often are) is they were made from Delrin which was developed for the catering market being "food safe" whatever that may entail, the stuff is reputed to be pretty much indestrucible though I didn't try it out.

The piece itself was excellent, went really well with my 10M, but I have more flexibility in my current favourite so it had to go.
