Wanted Wanted, Super Dearman White Composite Alto Mouthpiece.

Hi Guys,

I am looking for the above mouthpiece to finish off my Grafton project. The mouthpiece required was sometimes supplied with the Grafton and has a white plastic fluted body with a slide on metal ligature with 2 knurled screws underneath also a slide on metal reed guard. Very similar to the Lawton style set up. Any leads would be really appreciated. TIA

Thanks for all the replies guys. After much research it would seem this definitely a Lelandais le Jaseur stencil mouthpiece. I have got no further in finding one, despite the many contacts I have worldwide. I have seen an image of a black one as well which would work for me if anybody has one or something very similar. TIA

I have a Dearman Super that came in the original case with a Grafton, note the distinctive orange/copper colour lacquer that matches the Grafton keywork and neck lacquer. It's a different design to the one you are after. It's a bit grubby and slightly cracked, for sale, but only with the Grafton alto attached.

I've owned and seen quite a few Graftons and all had this style with them with the Grafton style lacquer on ligature and cap so I think these were the standard Grafton issue. In the unlikely event that the buyer of the alto doesn't want this then I would sell it separately if it's of any interest.

The one in your image may well have been included with graftons, but if so I'm sure it would have the matching lacquer.

I have a white Super Dearman 6* like Pete's, plus a lig that's dissimilar to the one above, but a bit more coppery than usual. I also have a black plastic piece like the Jack Heyworth Paramount In your post #6 (which on closer inspection is very similar to, but not exactly like the Lelandais Jaseur - different shaped flutes, length of lig groove). The only marking on the black one is 4*, and it has a fine crack in it (could probably be sealed with superglue?); no lig.

You could call this seller and ask who he sold it to?...

I honestly doubt those were supplied with Graftons given the number I've seen with the matching copper coloured lacquer ligature and cap. Maybe if there was a time they were out of stock or supply of them they may have fallen back to a different Dearman mouthpiece I suppose but one with the wrong color like that just doesn't look right. It should be easy enough to get the standard white Dearman and relacqer to the copper finish though.

I was going to bid on the white one on eBay but was in the middle of something when the auction ended, thus missing out. I have already contacted the seller on ebay and he tells me the item has gone to a collector in Japan. He is going to contact the seller and tell him of my plight but reckons it’s very unlikely he will let it go.

I have the Grafton sales leaflet from the late 40s, it clearly shows that style of mouthpiece on the front cover. I am thinking that perhaps these were the style to be used but they elected to use a more modern style. Maybe fluted mouthpieces were going out of favour by the time production started in the 50s?

I stand correct then, but I would still suspect they would have the metal parts lacquered to go with the coppery color.

Having said that I have seen a silver plated Grafton, I think owned by Phill Straker.

That leaflet looks great - I would appreciate a copy if that is possible.

I bought my Grafton in 1985 from a seller who advertised three Graftons for sale in the Exchange and Mart. When I travelled down to see them, I discovered one that was almost playable, one with a badly cracked body and one that was just a plastic bag of the keywork. I bought the lot, had the whole one put in playable condition and later sold off the rest. The one with the cracked body had silver plated keywork and a silver coloured crook. None of them had a mouthpiece with them.

Also in 1985 there was an interesting article on the Grafton saxophone and its inventor, Hector Sommaruga. This was written by Wally Horwood, author of a biography of Antoine-Joseph (Adolph) Sax, and published in the magazine of the UK Clarinet and Saxophone Society.

Hi, Mikey! Have you already got the mouthpiece you were looking for? I'm from Brazil and I have one of these in great shape.
