I have been organising the Songs and Ballads Of The Month for the last 5 years - that's 120 tunes - and I want a break, so we are looking for someone to take over.
To make the task easier, I am proposing to merge BOTM and SOTM, so that there will only be one song per month.
The job entails finding a host each month and then helping them to produce notes and backing track if necessary (it usually is).
I can help with the notes and backing tracks, but the organiser should be familiar with MuseScore (or something similar) and Band In A Box.

Any volunteers?

Nigel

Could someone just choose a tune each month and those who want to contribute find their own backing and dots? There are loads of YouTube Chanels and other sites offering playalongs and folk tend to have their own collection too. Just an idea :)

@nigeld thanks for your long years of excellent service. You have done a great job and we are really grateful.

That is a possibility, though my fear is that it would put off some people.
Actually, producing the notes and the backing track is not difficult in most cases, especially for standards that are in a Real Book. If I have a chord chart then I can produce a BIAB backing track in an hour.

@nigeld you've done a fantastic job with this. Bravo!

Sadly I was not able to participate in the last few years and unfortunately I'm not in a position to take over.

Huge big thank you to Nigeld you have done a really great job and service to the Café

The great thing about SOTM is that I can run through the list of songs, choose one, and voila... the notes and backing track are already done. No searching.

Think the responsibility should be shared its a lot for one person so well done @nigeld.. I only use karaoke version and a score from music notes not sure if that would do..

Many thanks, Nigeld!
I'd love to see a survey here of how many of us were host for a month of either SOTM or BOTM under your leadership.
It would also be great to see how many of us contributed an effort on either.
It was a privilege working under your direction for the April, 2023 SOTM!

How to increase the activity on BOTM, SOTM ...... ? It's never been easier to record and upload songs as it is today. So what's wrong? Too serious? Too "chichi"? Too predictable? Or is it just that the number of sax players and and aspiring session players are decreasing? I don't know! I don't know why I'm hesitating when it comes to upload my bad recordings? Everything we can do to keep on playing the saxophone is good.

I wanted to participate in the last one (on Sad Ones) but between the other stuff I'm practicing and just not being able to play well enough yet (that is, I actually couldn't play the notes ;) ) I couldn't get to it in time. Definitely planning to do future ones though.

I don't mind to listen to players that are not ready. Players that is trying have my heart. To ask for help is that a bad thing? Maybe it's just a few tones, fingerings .... that can help you to go further?

But remember, there is no deadline, so even well after the end of the month, years later even, a new recording is welcome.

Have a go, as others have said there's no limit. Granted I set myself the challenge of playing it in the month. The dots looked easy enough, but took some work, and I could only play what's written no improvising like others could. I still play it occasionally, good Subtone practice.

@nigeld thanks for your hosting, I wouldn't know where to begin!

Perhaps we could recycle some of the older pieces? Or have a 'theme' of the month? eg musicals, movies, and use what players have to hand.
