Please help me, I've just had an attack of GAS (encouraged by my wife) and I'm about to order a Venus Baritone. I don't need it, it will be just a toy. SO please try and talk me out of it, I only have about 2 hours before forking out the cash!!!!

John.

Aghhhhhh, TOO LATE :shocked:
The help I needed didn't arrive. I've been and gorn and done it.
THE MISSUS WINS YET AGAIN!!!!!!

Pick it up on Monday >:)

Thant's the spirit. A man can never have too many saxophones. And every saxoholic has to have a baritone, even if it only get played occasionally. I'm going to give mine (Bauhaus Walstein Bronze) a blast tonight. Just cos I can.

Who am I to stand between man and wife? I'm just off out to play mine (and me tenor) for a couple who've only just tied the knot!
Have fun with it John, remember, sound clips! We need sound clips!

Well done,:welldone hope you feel better now>:):))):))). +1
for sound clips:thumb::thumb::thumb:

or indeed between a man and his baritone.... :)))
I have to say that buying my baritone less than a month ago has given me (almost) the most pleasure I've had in recent years :))) :w00t: >:)

Mandy, I think someone needs to take you to one side and have a serious talk with you young lady! ;}>:):w00t:

I hope it's OK!

You have to be a bit careful with bari saxes from Chinese suppliers as it seems that while some factories are happy to knock out decent altos and tenors, they won't make baritones or sopranos...so a baritone may well not be from the same original source as the altos and tenors.

I had a quick look at the Venus site, and fortunately I can see that the bari is of the Yamaha type...with the low A thumb key arm that goes under the top stack.
These type tend, on the whole, to be the best models.

Regards,

Surely Johnboy is too old to play a Baritone. He could do himself a mischief and then what would his wife do thrills and spills...?

It should have been given more thought before proceeding - unless his wife has ulterior motives..........:shocked::w00t:;}

Right, I arrived back home last evening, after avery traumatic time with the car, which after an expensive one night stay at a hotel(98 euros, breakfast not included!), was a tyre problem!
So now I can own up to the deception surrounding my GAS attack!
When I went to Madrid a couple of weeks ago, I was taken (forcibly you understand) to a bar that had a number of old saxes hanging on the walls. There were two tenors (one nickel plate and one with not much lacquer), an alto that had seen better days and the object that became the start of my GAS attack - a Beaucher bari, hanging precariously above the doorway!! Egged on by the other guys I started to ply the bar owner with the usual "Crow blarney" and copious amounts of booze. Anyway to cut a long (boring) story short, I convinced him that it was in a very dangerous position, and it would be better if he sold it to someone who would be prepared to spend hundreds of euros on it to get it back in playing condition. He wouldn't accept 50 euros, but gave in to my 100 euro offer. I mean, as there was no mouthpiece, I was going to fork out for one and it was going to fall on someone wasn't it!
When I got it home, my good lady copmplained that it wasn't the Venus "A" sax that I had been hankering after, and as we were coming over to the U.K. why didn't I try and sell it to my tenor playing Spanish mate, and then buy a "Venus".
Thanks to you lot, I bought the Venus before selling the Beaucher!! On the way to collect it, I called in to my favorite shop, "Woodwind & Brass" to pick up a few bari bits, only to find Stephen "Haynes" Howard there. Not wanting to get any preconceived ideas, I didn't mention where I was going (sorry Stephen!). Having got the sax home yesterday, I played it with the Chinese reed supplied (after ATG treatment >:)) and it played well from top to bottom. Then I used an UNTREATED Fibracell 2, with fantastic results (sound clip to follow). In my opinion this sax is worth much more than the £1050 asking price :welldone.
To show how pleased I am with it, last night I sold the Beaucher to my mate for the 100 euros I paid for it :w00t:

Have you ever thought of writing a book - geat story, had me laughing... Tell your mate, if he doesn't want to keep that bari, there's a good home waiting for it here in Bavaria....

Nice one John,
Those Metalite Bari mouthpieces have some rave reveiw's. >:)
Rob.

Rob, you didn't think for one moment that I wouldn't be ordering a M7/M9 post haste did you? But "She who must be obeyed" says that we must go to the shops for food (I'm going for some delicious Caramel Vodka at 4.30 euros a bottle >:)).

John.

Sounds like it is all shifting in the Sax World again. While Mauriat become the new Selmer, and Bauhaus Walstein become the new Mauriat, Venus are taking over as the new Bauhaus Walstein, with Buffet Crampon also making inroads into the semi-mythical "Big Four"
