I am currently playing a Windcraft Etude with Marca Jazz 2.5 reeds I really like this combination. I am led to believe that this mouthpiece is based on an Otto Link Tone Edge HR. Good as this is I wonder if a proper Tone Edge would be an improvement. I wonder if anyone in the Cafe has tried both and compared them.

Thank's Prof that sounds like a good idea. I will give them a ring later today. I have noticed from reading the forum, two things that don't get much response. One is questions about Windcraft Etudes. The other is about how good is a Jericho tenor sax .Plenty about the alto though. It is funny how when those saxophones first hit the marketplace they were classed as the bee's knee's and incredible value for money "almost identical to a Yamaha 62,"now they are largely ignored. I wonder why.

Actually @dref the Etude is well recommended on the forum. Great starter mpc as it is very consistent and easy to blow. I have never played a Jericho so I cannot comment but there are quite a few threads where they are mentioned and compared. Maybe something in resources section as well, worth checking.

The yard sale is always worth checking for horns and accessories. All kit is sold by forum members.

Thank,s for the kind replies folk's.I am saving up to replace my gear4music tenor, which by the way ,is not so bad. I wonder if a Jericho would make a worthwhile short term upgrade for a couple of years until i can afford a yts62 or something similar. After all they are cheap as chips for what you get.

Whether a Jericho is a worthy upgrade from a G4M is debatable IF the G4M is in a good state of service, Colin the Bear here has been gigging his G4M for years and its still going .

personally I think you`d be better off spending (far less) getting the horn you have to one of the top Techs like Stephen Howard to give it a good setup than throwing more money at Chinese budget horns ...... When you have saved the cash for a used Yamaha, Yani or Keilwerth etc , then you`ll have had your moneys worth from the G4M and not wasted the best part of £300 on an non-upgrade .

I had my gear4music tenor and my Thomman soprano professionally set up by Roger Price of Chirk who is a very accomplished and well thought of Technician local to me .It didn't half make a difference.Deep down I know that I should stick with what I what I have got until I can afford a proper upgrade but It's my birthday soon and on one of the Jericho adverts it say's LOOKING FOR A YAMAHA 62 WHY NOT BUY A JERICHO THEY ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL. Is this misleading advertising or are these horns really almost identical

I just looked at their advert. They are based in Hampshire and and offer thirty days money back guarantee. You can't really get any fairer for a "try before you buy" can you? Again....I have no experience of Jericho or G4M only what I've heard and read on this forum

Roger Price is one of the big three super-techs in my opinion (the other two being the two Steves - Howard and Crow) . as for Jericho's advert, take it with a pinch of salt , there are a Heap of no name Chinese horns which are "almost identical" to a Selmer SA80 too 😉 .. I`d suggest keeping the "Rogered" G4M and bank the cash until you`ve got enough to choose between nice used examples of a bunch of Pro horns (for example Yam 62, Keilwerth SX90, TJ RAW, Yani 901, Selmer SA80 etc)

This is strange. I started asking about upgrades from a Windcraft Etude and then turned it into a saxophone upgrade question.. I suppose I was saying " What's wrong here?". " Is it me or my set up?". What is illuminating to me is that since I started using Marca Jazz reeds I have fallen in love with my Eugene Rousseau jdx7 mouthpiece. This suggests to me that the matching of equipment is of paramount importance as is the matching of equipment to the individual player. I Feel that I have made real progress without spending any more money than the cost of a reed. I love my jdx7 now I used to hate it.

I think you are right it is all about getting the right equipment for you. The only problem is at different stages you find you need to change things. 😉

Jx

Marca jazz are excellent. I'm in the middle of swapping to them from Rico Select Jazz. Rigotti ate also getting some converts, but I've not tried them. Good to hear you're sorted.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
