upgrade from YAS-23

Hi. I'm looking to upgrade from my Yamaha YAS-23 alto to something a bit better. I mainly play Tenor, Flute and a bit of soprano, though I've started playing the alto more lately. As it's not my main instrument I'm not able to shell out lots of cash. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, where are you and what makes/models have you thought about as an upgrade?

South East Wales.
I was thinking about something like a YAS-32, or even a YAS-62 if the price was right. Having said that I have no brand loyalty; I play a Yanagisawa tenor, a Pearl flute and a Bauhaus soprano.

Price: than a grand. Like I said, I won't be playing it as much as my tenor & flute. Modern or vintage would be fine. I don't use the F# key, so I can live without that. I'd be happy to trade my YAS-23. I also have a spare Meyer (5M) alto mouthpiece that can be traded. Superficial condition doesn't bother me (I'm looking a bit worn myself these days, so I can't grumble if my instruments are in a similar state), but I am fussy about wear on pads & springs.

There are a 62 with less than mint laquer on Gumtree or Preloved for around £800 - superb upgrade and a great contender for "Last Alto"

What don't you like about the 23? If you can answer that, it might help your search. If you can't ...

The 23 sounds great and I love the action, but it's getting to the stage where one of the pads needs looking at and it probably needs recorking. I'm a wee bit nervous about it letting me down half way through a paying gig. So while I'm thinking about spending some money on getting it working nicely again I thought I'd also consider a replacement.

Naturally I'd have to recommend the Buffet 400 matte model as I've preferred mine to YAS-275 and YAS-62 MkI. If you can find one of those for around £600 2nd hand snap it up!!

Having said that, I recently bought an early 80's YTS-23 and it plays very well even though it needs a few tweaks, so a service on yours may well be the answer unless you "feel" you must change?

Hmmmm..... having weighed up all the advice I've had I'll take the sax to my local repair goddess and see what she thinks about giving it an overhaul. Maybe my best bet would be to stick with the YAS-23 for the moment and keep an eye out for any bargains that crop up. Many thanks for your advice, fellow noise makers.
(By the way, I checked out thesaxman71's You Tube clips [links at the bottom of his replies - see above] and was well impressed. That man can certainly play.)

Getting a full overhaul is nearly as good as getting a new sax, so good luck and enjoy!
