Mouthpieces Upgrade from Sharkbite Tenor mpc

Hi all,

I recently picked up a DM Sharkbite 6 in addition to the HR mpc I bid for on Evilbay.

This is the first time I tried a metal mpc on my tenor (Selmer Ref 36) and surprised to find it was easy to play and sounded okay.

Can more experienced folk makes some suggestions as which metal mpc (make/size etc.) would be worth my while considering as an upgrade.

Thanks,
Tony

Morning Tony

You might find a range of learned opinions here and none of them quite right for you because we are all built differently, we have a range of tastes and we play different horns

One persons coveted Otto van Jody might be anothers doorstop

An oft repeated piece of advice is to go to a shop and try a few which will give you the chance to compare manufacturer, style and tip openings side by side. You might even find an ebonite mouthpiece that rings your bell more than a metal one

There are at least two good sax shops in London and also a specialist mouthpiece maker, Ed Pillinger, who can give sound advice in person and who makes a wide range of superb mouthpieces

Some shops will let you have mouthpieces on trial. I think it might have been Dawkes

I`ve got a sharkbite hanging around , it`s a bit wooly even on an aggressive Yamaha but far from being a dog - there are some far more lively options out there , problem is way too much choice , I`d see what other Ref-36 / Series-III owners who play your kind of music are using and take it from there

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the replies so far.

Dawkes in Maidenhead is little too far as a commute.

I've got a full range of ebonite/HR pieces - Vandoren, Claude Lakey, Selmer, Saxscape and current favourite, a PPT Onyxite 7. But I'd like a few ideas of what I could try as a metal mpc.

Any feedback from Ref 36 players playing jazz/blues would be useful.

Cheers,
Tony

Too far a commute? North London to Paddington.....then a twenty minute fast train. Dawkes is a ten minute walk form the station. Big shop, Professor Anton Weinberg who designed the Windcraft mouthpieces, loads of horns, accessories, refreshment, great help.....and yes. They also mail them out.

Howarths have a number of second hand as well as new mouthpieces http://www.howarth.uk.com/wo/manuals//2014saxmouthpiece2ndhand.htm

Fraser, thanks for the info.
I'm just looking for ideas and I won't hold it against anybody if what they use isn't my cup of tea.
BTW From where I live it takes 1 hour plus to get to Paddington on a good day. I'd rather put the money towards a decent used piece which I can probably get on approval from Howarths.
So keep the ideas etc. coming folks.

May be an idea to contact Sakshama Koloski over in the USA through his Sakshama mouthpiece site, i've found him very helpfull, if you explain what it is your after he will guide you as to what will probably be best for you, he's very good at returning emails also! www.sakshamamouthpieces.com

I'm not sure you will get second hand mouthpieces on approval (at least them's the rules I remember) but here's nothing to stop you visiting the premises for a go

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
