Saxophones Trevor James Signature Custom gold lacquer, a good tenor?

Hi,

I am wondering about the quality of the Trevor James Signature Custom gold lacquer tenor sax. Is it as good as the TJ CS RAW model or is it an earlier version, maybe not as good as the RAW?

I own a TJ SC RAW tenor and I like it very much but I am looking for a gold lacquered tenor for outside use.
So a gold lacquer TJ SC tenor came up my mind first. However there's no gold laquered one available in my area to try.

Please let me know if someone played one or can tell me more about the Signature Custom history.

cheers,
Anton

Personally I'd go to a shop supplying TJ saxes, try a version of the one David UK is selling in Yardsale, decide it's fine for outside and snap up the apparent bargain

(I have no conflict of interest)

Odd that a second one of these TJ SR models has appeared for sale at under £999. I bought the same model new 12 months ago, at about the same price but with no obvious explanation for such a large discount on the discounted price.

Thanks for the replies. I want the Signature Custom model because I really love my TJ SC RAW. I am hoping the lacquered one is nearly as good as my unlacquerd one. I know the other models are also very good but the RAW is really amazing.

Are sax prices about to plunge like oil?

I played one a few years ago. I really liked it. Strong, forceful tone, nice ergonomics. In the end I went for a Yanagisawa T992, which for me was better, but I did really like the Sig Custom.

I sold one on here recently and they are great horns. TJ SR. And I believe that DavidUK has one for sale as well.

See what Stephen Howard has to say about them............

I saw what Stephen Howard has to say about the RAW. But how about the SC Gold lacquer? I don't know what lacquer does to the sound of a sax (don't want to go there... ) Is it besides the unlacq./lacq. the very same saxophone?

I think the only way you are going to decide is if you had both saxes in front of you and see if there was a difference,i own a RAW alto and love it but i haven't tried the SC with the lacquered finishes.
The other thing you could do is speak or email TJ themselves and they would be able to tell you.

Good luck

I don't think any two saxophones play the same. Even two consecutive straight out of the box. Some just have a certain something.

The lacquer will stop it going manky only till it wears off and chips. Do they do a black nickel?

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
