Tonal Function Based Ear Training

Just had a read of this, normally if I am told to sing something I run a mile but you make it sound so easy, it is on my list of things to look at in more detail.

Thank you

This looks so interesting, and so good.

But when? I need stop work, so I can practise all the things

but then I couldn't afford somewhere to practise ie a house, or my lessons, or the car to get to band.......

Jay, I would say that I did about 4-5 hours of this stuff each week for a little over 3 months during my initial investigation, and that was sufficient to notice a big change by the end of that initial period. I usually did my work in 2 to 3 sessions, so one 3 hour session (a class each week) and then a couple other preparation times. Anyways, it's worth the investment, and if you could devote half an hour a day I'm assuming you would get the same results.

I think what I need here is an audio CD system that can be done purely by singing in the car. Then I can use the journey to work 🙂 Off to investigate.

That sounds like a really good idea. I'm doing some of my practice in the car too. Both of the books that I link to in the article come with audio CDs. So one has 50 songs (and there's other books with more songs) and the method books have the Tonal patterns as well as some songs and rhythmic patterns which I didn't get into in the article

I think singing is really important, even if you feel you need to do it quietly and/or make sure nobody's listening. If you can't sing a line you can't play it in tune. Ben's exercises sound a bit advanced for me, but you need to learn to hear intervals and by far the best way. is by singing (or even just humming) them.

You see I just don't sing any of it and avoid doing so at all costs, I am going to need nagging to do this 😱
