Sounds highly processed to me. Hard to hear what the basic sax sound is like underneath that.

Rhys

PS And his fingers are flying about just like mine !

Check out Little sunflower track i done today.I found the best natural sweet spot to my new sax,mic combo.Found the real natural sound of me and my set up here.No EQ ,just a tiny bit of reverb plus better mic distance.I love the sound i got here Rhys. The Raw shows its great woody core i think here.

Sounding great Davey and it's easier to hear what the sax sounds like on your recording. But Andy Brush sounds great too.

I had to play Little Sunflower on an improvisation workshop a couple of months ago - wish that I had heard your recording first.

ok guys I see from your sigs that this is the Emperor's new TJ-Raw appreciation society,
but I'm not hearing anything that makes me dump my tenors in the Clyde.
As politicians know- "never ask a question you don't know the answer to",
so if you ask "how good does this sound!", don't get annoyed if someone replies "not very"

Maybe we can find some more better recorded and "interesting" examples of how to solo
over long static sections of minor key-centres:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeZomqLM7BQ

p.s. Davey- you're a country mile out on your version of Stardust, that's the wrong section of the tune!
you need to play the VERSE at the start : "And now the purple dusk of twilight time / Steals across the meadows of my heart"
here's how it goes, from someone who knows:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VR-pb09z6p8

hope that helps.

WOW so i dont know,i guess you do eh .....No 1 is wanting you to throw your horns in the Clyde so dont worry. As for asking a question well theres ways of having your answer without it sounding rude.My clip sounds rather nice and melodic here i think as does Andys clip.Your free to say your opinion.Other people have enjoyed it alot.I dont expect everyone will and i dont say its anything special but again here i think your being rather rude again. You were rather rude about Andys clip and now mine.Cheers for being so up front.Hey i dont brag to be any Sonny Stitt also. You got me laughing how put a total legend of jazz beside me.Would be nice to hear your sounds on here to see if you know.Sorry if this sounds like a bite as its not its just in 2 replys i get the opinion your rude and well the next part i cant say as it would be wrong on the forum. The last thing we need on here is some smart ar** and jazz snobs.
PS, hope this helps

Andy - a few more clips of the RAW, and yes I am a big fan, and yes I am a VERY average player on my very best days. But it does give me great pleasure. You should try one, you never know, you might just like it!

Davey sounds great, always enjoy listening to his stuff as i do everyones clips, so come on, focus on the positive and don't drain your spirit with the negative!

thanks for the links, Merryfisher I'll take a listen, & next time I'm at a big dealers in Edinburgh i'll see what they have in stock [imho the only way to judge a horn is to play it]. Just back from a gig on one of my old Conn's though , it's working well for me with an old berg i came across.
Maybe one of you guys can let Davey know about the stardust thing, I tend to tell adults the "straight no chaser"way.
Stitt nails it, but Davey is playing the wrong section, i suggest he listens & learns the verse & tune from Sonny and doesn't worry too much about "woody cores". as for Mr Brush... well in my book, B is for Byas, Butman, Bechet, Berg, Bergonzi & Brecker. But not Brush, at least not yet. We can all talk about scalar noodling over static harmony some other time

Thanks for your words of wisdom but i will pass.Just stay out of my way and me from yours i think.Sonny Still did nail it but i'm just Joe average and why would i learn it to your way when i like mine.I played the theme then took the blow,i like it ,it all fits and i dont sound like so many other people do.I've worked hard at getting my own mix of styles and i cant stand people who say you can or cant.If i want to i will.To save me time why dont you post a clip of you playing the CORRECT way on this tune.As for Woody core i will worry so again thanks but no thanks. Also B in my book is for Bull**itter which reminds me of someone.

PS, i have just checked the Wiki dots of the tune and they are different from the dots i used in 1 of my Bb fake books and i used a Aebersold track but hey ho it all still fits in the end.At least its not just another version played the way thousands have ,after all its jazz you know ;} really looking forward to hearing your correct version and also your take on a long static playing over 1 chord.

Isn't Cafe Society fun??

I personally enjoyed Daveys interpretation. It may not be to other peoples taste but that is surely the point. We all have different tastes. OK so maybe the piece was played in a way which may upset 'purists' although I have always held the view that critics are an unneccessary evil.

I am really looking forward to hearing Andy's performance which I am sure will be posted very soon.... Let me say that however bad it might be it will probably be better than anything I can do. But who cares. Lets all just enjoy doing what we do and play nicely together...

Sorry Lads, I'm too busy enjoying being a working musician to record tracks specially for trolls who imply I'm a "rude" "smart ar**", "jazz snob" "Bull**itter".
Reread what I wrote- I said nothing about Davey's improv skills, tone, whatever , i just tell him, player to player, that he's playing the wrong section of the tune which makes it near impossible to judge the TJ sax in question.
here's the transposable sheet for Stardust, with the verse, use it or loose it:
