Jazz The Lick

Somebody has way too much time on his hands. :)
 
Avoiding that 'lick' (and I use the word lick in the broadest way possible) is like avoiding using the letters 're' and 'ne', or better yet, playing a sax solo without a sax.
 
Given the note sequence (tonic, 2nd, b3rd, 4th, down to 2nd, down to b7th, up to tonic) I can understand why it's common - it's just a decoration around the tonic and given that a common cadential sequence would be I IIB V7 I that lick pretty well covers off those chords.
