Same way the guitarists get their sound out without a lead - miming to a recording.. Looks a bit like an old Top of the Pops recording. And I can remember the days when the DJ would put the record on to play with the group miming on stage.. Fallen angel JS springs to mind...

Well, I apologise for not being able to find better non-mimed footage of the original line up of the Bar Kays, maybe it's because 4 of them died in a plane crash while on tour with Otis Redding - didn't stop them carrying on and doing stuff like this -
