StaxofSax Workshop, Leicester, 16/04/14

Hi Folks

We are back with our latest workshop in Leicester. This time its on a Wednesday and takes place at the Leicester South Salvation Army Hall, in South Wigston.

As usual the day is ope to anyone aged 11 and over (it is mainly adults but with a few dedicated youngsters) with 12 months of playing experience, and will cover a large ensemble rehearsal and performance on a piece that has been especially arranged for the day, and the afternoon is dedicated to learning/improving your improvisational skills.

We have had quite a few members of the Cafe Saxophone community attend previous days and it would be good to see you and some new faces join us for this one.

The doors open at 9.30am giving you time to unpack, mingle, drink tea/coffee and generally get ready to start playing from 10am. Lunch is at about 12.30pm and we have a very nice onsite cafe that covers that need, you can of course bring your own lunch if you wish. The afternoon session starts at 1pm and is led by Nick Hislam, a local Jazz player and educator. This session is aimed at players of all levels, beginner through to experienced improvisors. Music is sent out in advance to allow you to get the most out of the day.

There is no need to worry about parking as there are 70 free spaces at the venue.

The acoustics are brilliant in this venue as the building was designed with music making in mind. The cost of the day is still £30 per player and will make a donation to Pete's charity for every forum member that attends.

To check out videos and pictures of previous events go to the staxofsax facebook page. if you wish to reserve a place please get in touch either through the forum or staxofsax<<at>>gmail.com

I look forward to hearing from you

regards

Dave and Chris and Nick

Ps please spread the word to any non forum members as the more the merrier.
thanks

Can I just say that if you can make it it's well worth it. I have attended maybe 5 or 6 and thoroughly enjoyed every one.
I'll will be there on 16th - if anyone wants a lift en route I am happy to try to co-ordinate a lift.

Thanks for the post Mandy, we have 9 people booked so far but ideally we would need a few more so that we get the best sound for the large ensemble piece. This one is going to be pretty funky!

Mandy is also our unofficial sound engineer, for which we are very grateful.

We are happy to provide sick notes for those that need to pull a sickie!!!

Today was a good days playing in Leicester. Its was good to see four new attendees joining us and having fun. We had a really funky version of this will be, with some great harmonies in there. The 2nd piece was Pharrell Williams, Happy. The jazz session was a Horace Silver fest with work done on Sister Sadie and Song for my Father. Its good to hear such a big improvement in the level of improvisation over the last couple of years.

Thanks to everyone that joined us, and if anyone fancies joining us for the summer one, please message me and I will put you on the mailing list as soon as the date is announced.

regards

Dave

A big thanks to Dave, Chris and Nick for a most enjoyable workshop.

As one of the new attendees at the workshop I would highly recommend future workshops to anyone who wants an enjoyable day of music and a good learning experience. Dave, Chris and Nick are excellent communicators and put significant effort into organising what was a most enjoyable event. The workshop was informal, friendly and as a beginner amongst some talent musicians I was not made to feel a numpty in any way -even with my woeful attempts at improvisation. It was a real buzz to see how a 12 or more folk came together to work on the large ensemble piece and within a couple of hours of focused practice under the guidance of Dave and Chris produced what I thought was a great performance.
