In some of studies i am practicing, I see a note before the first bar in a piece of music. I have attached the example. Why is it like this? Doesn't this make playing more complicated - starting the music from 4th beat.

What is the reason for composing like this?

As usual thanks everyone !!

It's name is an 'anacrusis', you will find the piece of music's last bar will be shorter by the length of the ancrusis.
Also known as 'pick-up notes'. I think..As for why?? I'll let someone else take that one.

In some cases it has to do with the lyrics of the song. For example:

Oh Dan-ny | Boy____ the | pipes the pipes are | calling_____ |

The stress is on the word "Boy" and the note that goes with it. "Pick up" notes whether they are associated with lyrics or not, are always leading toward a note that is given more stress. It is common in interpreting a song to hold back on the pick ups in order to give even more attention to the note that follows.
