Stan Getz on alto

Just been listing to Iggy Pop's show Sax in the City. He played Quiet nights of quiet stars - Joao and Astrid Gilberto - and said Getz was paying alto, explaining that the alto was the smaller saxophone.

Is that correct - not that the alto is smaller, but that Getz played alto on that track? It doesn't sound like it to me but then my ears aren't what they were!

No, Stan Getz played tenor almost exclusively and definitely tenor on "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" (Corcovado).

He had quite a "light" tone at that point in his career and I suppose some people might mistake his sound higher up the tenor range for an alto. And what a beautiful sound it was !

That was my thinking. Iggy Pop also said that Getz was german - I was under the impression that he came from Ukrainian stock.

Having criticised the inaccuracies, the programme is quite interesting - I'm only about half way through listening.

Wiki has him as born in America to Ukranian Jewish parents. It's very strange listening to him play sometimes. If you think alto it sounds alto but if you think tenor it sounds tenor.

Stan is one of my favorites! I used to listen to his duets with Kenny Barron every day. I'm sure this has probably made it's rounds before but here is a link to Stan Getz actually playing the Alto. Lucky Thompson is playing the tenor I believe. It sounds undeniably Stan🙂 And I don't know of any other recordings out there with him playing alto.

Rather late I know but there is a YouTube of Stan playing wonderful soprano.
I don't have the link, but the tune is 'Being There' As always with Getz - a thing of great beauty.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
