SOTM SOTM November 24 TWNBAY

I’ve included in my Dropbox attachment the Bb and Eb Real Book versions plus one backing track

Alex if you don't mind a request: the charts you posted I think are in an Apple-specific file format that makes it difficult for me to view them. It's not a problem for this month because I have the chart already, but if maybe on your end it's simply a matter of choosing a standard format like PDF, PNG, etc. when you make the file that perhaps would be helpful for others.

Oh that’s interesting. I’ve never encountered that before from any of the other files I’ve put on DB over the years on SOTW etc
I’m hoping that most will have access to the printed Bb and Eb versions and the videos I mentioned are easily accessible via YT of course. But thanks for the heads up. I’m sure others will let me know if there’s a problem.

I’ve just renamed the sheet music so it should be ok now.

Sounds just fine and dandy to me Peter. Shame about having no chance to record more. One day maybe?

Yes, we need to hear more of that huge 10* link!
Thanks gents. 🙂

I'm currently not activily searching for a location to practise and make home recordings. Just playing rehearsals and gigs with the two big bands I'm playing in now. Who knows in the future, I'm now too busy with a lot of other things (including a heavy day job!).

I'm now playing on plastic Legere AC reeds, that make my sound a bit brighter. A recent live recording can be found here (in case you're interested to hear my present sound):

Nice, There'll Never Be Another You (Mack Gordon - lyrics, Harry Warren - music) is one of my favourites, Backing Track #17 (with lead), #18 (just background), key of C on Hal Leonard Jazz Play Along Volume 7, Essential Jazz Standards (CD version).

For alto and bari it is in the key of C, for soprano and tenor F. Looked through my archive, unfortunately don't have a recording. My multitrack recorder and mike is packed away, have my Fuji bridge camera, audio with AGC not that great in video mode but better than nothing. If can find the time and place may squeeze off a recording.

Thanks for your input and please find the files including lead sheets etc in my opening post.

Looking forward to you finding time for a contribution.

In the hope of keeping the interest up on this months TOTM I offer another version a more up tempo take than my first with no fx (😱😱😱) and a cracking backing track.

As always thank you for listening if you have time and do have ago at this one if you can it’s really nice to hear other members playing.

Best,

Alex

Nice sound! And great intonation. And I like how you keep the solo nice and syncopated at the start, really fits with the groove, and then when you flow into a line it works really well! Good stuff.

Hey SP

Great stuff 😎 you really embrace the sambaesque feel very well. Nice outlining of the changes too. Clean and clear throughout. I’m not suffering any infliction here I can assure you 😊
Great to have another track to add to this months collection.
I do hope others might just summon the wherewithal to add.
Pete’s post about the site needing more members and interaction is a reflection of these TOTM’s unfortunately.
Here’s hoping for more players to jump onboard 🤞

here's a test take with my new alto sax.

Thanks for sharing.

I think the first thing to mention is your tuning.

It might be good to work with a tuner to see where your concert A is on your horn.

It’s difficult to listen to your lines when they are as out of tune as they are.

However your lines are definitely in the right frame for phrasing well in a jazz context.

Lots of angular momentum and some nice tonal changes but just get the tuning together to make it complete.

Once again thank you for sharing🙏

Great to have more contributions and great to hear you @LionCrown ! Phrasing is definitely in the right place, and filling the gaps through those long notes which are so prevalent in this tune!

To expand on this a little, I think some general work with the tuner would really help; in the saxophone world there's often a misconception that moving the mouthpiece sets your horn in tune..... in reality the majority is done with your embouchure!

I'd recommend having the tuner out, and get a few tones sorted and in tune. Then slowly with the tuner play through the song. As you work through it, play each note and try to hear whether it's in tune or not, then look at the tuner and check. Try to get a feel of where certain notes are played under or over. Bring the note back to being in tune by relaxing if sharp or tightening up (don't bite!) if flat. As you repeat the tune, try to remember and hear those adjustments, over time they will get quicker and quicker until you automatically do them before you even play.

There's a great video from Dave Pollack on how to work on this here:

A little bit of time spent on this will reap huge rewards, and has the benefit of also really helping your ear develop.

Once again, thanks for getting involved, and I look forward to hearing more takes!
